Asi, 8, has been a Kumon student for three years and has excelled in the English and Maths Programmes.
The English Programme has helped spark Asi’s passion for reading. His love of words has helped to accelerate him three years beyond his current school level while his maths ability has also improved.
“In English, I am on Level GII, which includes reading paragraphs and comprehension and in maths I am on Level D where I am learning multiplication and division. It’s a bit challenging. Soon I am going to be doing harder work so I need to work hard on my Kumon in order to do that,” Asi said.
Asi has read many books featured on Kumon’s Recommended Reading List. “I’ve read Martin’s Mice, The Shrinking of Treehorn, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue, James and the Giant Peach - I like this one, there’s also Peter Pan, Bridge to Terabithia, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – my brother says he wouldn’t like to be in the chocolate factory. I’ve also read Alice in Wonderland – I’ve read it and watched the movie too,” he said.
A fascination in outer space has Asi aspiring to become an astronaut. “I wrote a letter to NASA and they said you have to get good grades at school to be in NASA and you must do well in maths too,” he said.
Asi hopes to work with his friend to unlock the galaxy’s secrets. “I’d like to be an astronaut more than anything else. My best friend Kieran at school wants to be a scientist so I can collect moon rocks and send them to Kieran so he can study them,” he said.
With such ambitious dreams, Asi is focused on learning a little more, each day. “I’ve been working so hard to not get as many mistakes. Reading helps you to pronounce new words too and I have this many books at home (arms outstretched) – about half a metre!”
