Sam, 13, is ready for the challenges of high school and beyond after completing the Kumon English and Maths Programmes.
“My brother is doing engineering at university and sometimes I talk to him about the maths he has to do. It’s not easy, but I can do it,” Sam said.
His father, David, enrolled Sam in Kumon in 2009 to give him more practice in the fundamentals of maths and English. “The outcome has really exceeded our expectations,” David said. “Kumon really helped him make the most of his potential. Without Kumon, he wouldn’t have achieved so much.”
Sam’s advanced learning has provided him with opportunities to extend himself even further at school such as captaining his school’s winning team in the Waikato Maths competition, Wai Maths.
“There was 30 schools involved in Wai Maths so it felt great to win. I was really proud of myself,” Sam said.
Despite his academic edge, Sam explains Kumon to his friends as a different way to learn. “I tell my friends that Kumon is a self-learning programme where you can go at your own pace,” he said.
David has also seen his son develop the self-discipline and study skills that will help him to achieve in the years ahead. “Every day he would get back from school and straight away do his Kumon work. It teaches him organisation and good habits for the future.”
In his spare time, Sam likes to play badminton or practice the clarinet or ukulele.
