The Kumon Method and Its Strengths

About the Organization

4. Kumon Instructors

Providing individualized instruction and maximizing potential.

Guiding students to find the answers on their own

The Kumon worksheets are designed to allow students to advance by self-learning. Nonetheless, there are times when students encounter problems that they don't understand or are unable to solve on their own.

At times like these, Kumon Instructors do not immediately give students the answers to problems. Rather, our Instructors find out how much the students understand before giving them hints. Instructors may also show students example problems or previously studied material to help them solve difficult problems on their own.

Kumon Instructors do not spoon-feed students problem-solving methods. Instead, Instructors focus on guiding students to complete exercises on their own so that they enjoy a sense of achievement and are able to master new material independently.

Maximizing the potential of each individual

Kumon Instructors discover what each student is capable of and bring out the potential in every one of them.

Our Instructors focus on each student, paying careful attention to his or her academic ability and personality, and providing effective support to ensure that he or she can always study at a level that is “just right.” Kumon Instructors acknowledge the growth of each student without comparison to others, while offering praise and encouragement. At the same time, they cooperate closely with parents in monitoring the growth of each student.

It is thanks to these dedicated Instructors, who sincerely wish for the growth of their students, that the true benefits of the Kumon Method are achieved.

Students advance beyond school grade level

Children at Kumon begin studying at a level appropriate to their ability and advance at their own pace, regardless of age or school grade. For example, students in the fifth, sixth or even seventh grade, may begin their Kumon study with addition if deemed necessary. On the other hand, we do not prevent students from advancing to high-school material just because they are still in elementary school.

Students begin their Kumon study at a level that they can easily handle, which is often lower than the level of material they are studying at school. Before long, through continued study at the “just-right” level, they reach their school grade level and then advance beyond the material being studied in their school classroom.

After advancing two or three years beyond their school grade level, in addition to improving their academic ability, students become more eager to take on new challenges, and develop qualities such as increased independence and a positive attitude.

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow we at Kumon always have, and always will, place the utmost importance on continuing to learn.
